Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined one — the same pure crystallised carbon, the same 10 on the hardness scale, graded on the same 4Cs by the same laboratories. The only meaningful differences are how it formed and what it costs: typically 60–80% less than a natural diamond of the same specification.

This is the question people are most nervous to ask, so here is the direct answer: a lab-grown diamond is not a simulant, an imitation, or a substitute. It is a diamond. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials that look diamond-ish; a lab-grown diamond IS diamond, and no jeweller can tell it from a mined stone by eye or with a loupe.

The difference is time and place. A natural diamond crystallised deep in the earth over one to three billion years. A lab-grown diamond crystallises in a chamber that recreates the same heat and pressure — or grows atom by atom from carbon gas — over six to ten weeks. Same carbon, same lattice, same fire.

What that changes is what your budget buys. At the same price, a lab-grown stone is typically two to four times the carat weight, with a higher colour and clarity grade. What it does not buy is resale value: the lab-grown market has little secondary demand, so buy one to wear and enjoy, not as an investment. Natural diamonds hold value better, though retail resale is poor for both.

Millimetres are the face-up width of one diamond, cut to standard round-brilliant proportions. A deeper cut of the same weight looks a little smaller from above; a shallower one, a little larger.

What lab-grown is NOT

Three things that get confused with it, and are not the same at all.

Cubic zirconia

A different material entirely — zirconium dioxide. Softer, heavier, and it clouds with wear. Not a diamond.

Moissanite

Silicon carbide. Genuinely beautiful and very hard, but a different stone with more rainbow flash than a diamond. Privosa does not sell it.

Diamond simulant

Any stone made to look like a diamond without being one. A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant — it is diamond.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. They are pure crystallised carbon with the identical atomic structure, hardness, refractive index and sparkle as mined diamonds. Both the US Federal Trade Commission and the world's gemological laboratories classify them as diamonds.

Can a jeweller tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one?

Not by eye, and not with a standard 10× loupe. Distinguishing them requires specialist laboratory instruments that detect the minute growth patterns and trace elements left by each formation process.

How much cheaper are lab-grown diamonds?

Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?

Do lab-grown diamonds get cloudy or lose their sparkle?

No. This is a persistent myth. A diamond is a diamond — it rates 10 on the Mohs hardness scale and does not degrade, cloud or dull over time. Like any jewelry it needs periodic cleaning to remove skin oils and soap film.

Are lab-grown diamonds certified?

Which is more ethical, lab-grown or natural?
